The Duchy of Milan, under Spanish trusteeship, and the Duchy of Savoy had been at war since 1613 over the succession to the Marquisate of Montferrat located between their territories. The Waldensian movement, founded in the eleventh century by the Lyon merchant Valdès, advocated itinerant preaching and a life of evangelical perfection. It maintained links with the Hussite movement in Bohemia and joined the Reformation.
