Lot no. 258
[SAVOIE]. Binding with the coat of arms of Victor-Amédée I of Savoie, prince of Piedmont, converted into a notebook. In-12, brown morocco, double framed with two gilt fillets with fleurs-de-lis at the corners of the second, gilt aaccvv numeral at the inner corners, coat of arms in the centre, smooth spine decorated with a frame of double gilt fillets, gilt title and tomaison: Ronsard tom. II, gilt edges (Early 17th century binding). A very rare and beautiful binding bearing the arms of Victor-Amédée I of Savoy (1587-1637), Prince of Piedmont and Duke of Savoy from 1630 until his death, who in 1619 married the second daughter of Henri IV and Marie de Médicis, Christine de France (1606-1663), whose initial is intertwined with those of her husband. This binding can be dated between Victor-Amédée's marriage in 1619, when he was still crown prince of the House of Savoy (the arms are those of the princes of Piedmont, who bear de Savoie, broken by an azure label), and his accession to the ducal throne in 1630. The second volume of Ronsard's works it contained has been replaced by a modern white paper notebook and the endpapers have been renewed for the occasion. We sold the first volume on 16 March 2022, lot n°130. Binding a little rubbed, corners dulled.
