engraved with a shield bearing the Mentque (Martin
or Clicquot): "Argent three alérions
Sable between in chief a sun
under a count's crown.
Supporters: two lions.
Terrace with a cross of the Légion
of Honour.
Bone handle with two flats and twisted ribs.

Considering the dating of the object and the presence
of the Legion of Honour cross hanging from the
on the terrace, this seal could be either that of
Charles Martin de Mentque (1797 - 1872),
or that of his brother Edouard Mar tin
de Mentque (1808 - 1878) or one of their two
two Clicquot nephews who took over the name
de Mentque following a decree dated 1st September 1869:
Louis Henry Clicquot de Mentque (1817 - 1870)
or his brother Charles-Eugène Clicquot
de Mentque (1829 - 1894).
