Lot no. 235 - Paolo Monaldi
Genre scene oil on canvas 50 x 63 cm This work is a typical example of Paolo Monaldi, active in the Roman art scene, where he distinguished himself by painting mainly bambocciate, scenes with peasants engaged in the simple pleasures of country life: games and music, drinking and dancing. His works are set in an Arcadian atmosphere without subordinating them to the landscape. In 1767, Monaldi helped Paolo Anesi decorate the Villa Chigi in Via Salaria in Rome, where he painted a series of idyllic scenes. In the 1770s he probably participated in another decorative venture in the 18th-century flats of Palazzo Barberini, where the bambocciato on the doors has been attributed to him.Provenance:Sotheby's auction, 29 May 2007, lot 106Wannenes auction, 30 November 2016, lot 536
