CHESS PIECE SET "PORTUGUESE AGAINST CHINESE"
Portuguese/Macao, ca. 1830.
32 figures turned in ivory and finely florally carved, partly coloured red. The white king and lady as European monarchs, probably representing Carlos I of Portugal and his wife Maria Amelia. The red figures as Chinese kings, carved with elegantly decorated headdresses. White tower with Union Jack flag (possibly later).
H king 9.5 cm, peasant 5.8 cm.
White queen with missing part on the cross of the crown. Some signs of wear and minor defects. Horse bust of a red knight probably replaced. Minor missing parts.
