Schinkel, Karl Friedrich Decorations of interior rooms. Published by Martin Gropius master builder and professor, director of the Königl. Kunstschule zu Berlin. Eight sheets. Second edition. With 8 chromolithogr. plates after Schinkel in the Lithogr. Anst. v. W. Loeillot Berlin. Berlin, Ernst & Korn (Gropius'sche Buch- und Kunsthandlung), 1874. 2 pp., pls. large fol. blue OHLwd. with D-title and ribbons (dusty, bumped, capitals somewhat damaged, joints partly chipped, covers loose). 2nd edition of the very rare original work. - Cf. Ornamental masterpieces of the nineteenth century 1798 (1.A. 1869-1872). - With magnificent designs for wall and ceiling decorations, published by the German architect and former Schinkel pupil Martin Gropius (1824-1880). In his foreword, he explains the purpose of the work and emphasises the importance of colour in Schinkel's work, particularly in his interior projects, as well as the need for restoration measures to preserve the works. The plates are based either on Schinkel's original watercolour sketches, where available, as some of the original designs painted in distemper were already irretrievably lost at the time of publication, or on the surviving original designs in the buildings drawn by the Berlin artist Fechner under Gropius's guidance. - Front. Inner hinge reinforced, leaves loose, text somewhat browned due to paper, 1 plate slightly browned and dusty in w. margin, otherwise generally well-preserved. Second edition of this very rare portfolio. With 8 chromolithogr. plates after Schinkel. Publisher's printed blue half cloth with two ties (dust-soiled, bumped, spine ends frayed, hinges partly cracking, boards loosened). - With splendid designs for wall and ceiling decorations, edited by the German architect and former Schinkel pupil Martin Gropius (1824-1880).
