The brothers Adolph (Munich 1829 - East Turkestan 1857) and Hermann (Munich 1826 - 1882) Schlagintweit were German scientists who carried out numerous geological explorations in the Alps, particularly in the Monte Rosa region. Together with their brother Robert, they led a mission to India and the Himalayas from 1854 to 1857. On this occasion, they explored the Nanga Parbat region in 1856. Hermann and Robert returned to Europe in early 1857, but Adolph stayed on to explore East Turkestan; mistaken for a Chinese spy, he was murdered in Kashgar in August 1857.
