SCHMIED (François-Louis) - MARDRUS (Joseph-Charles). Charming story of the adolescent sugar of love. Paris: F. L. Schmied, 1927. - In-4, 305 x 237: (8 ff. first 4 blank), 145 pp. (9 ff. last 4 blank), illustrated cover. Original edition of this oriental tale, printed in an edition of 170 copies on Arches wove paper. The book was entirely designed and illustrated by François-Louis Schmied (1873-1941). It comprises 649 wood-engraved compositions, including hundreds of delicate "bouts de lignes", 132 carefully crafted headbands, a colour frontispiece and 13 full-page colour figures. Each copy is signed by the artist at the justification and on the frontispiece. Another edition, also illustrated by Schmied, was published simultaneously. Although different in terms of its illustrations, it is also considered a "first edition" according to the justification. With only 25 copies printed, it shares the same "achevé d'imprimer", dated 30 September 1927. One of 20 copies reserved for contributors, numbered XVIII, with the complete suite of 6 original illustrations by François-Louis Schmied for Flaubert's Salammbô (1923 edition). These plates, measuring 203 x 158 mm, are in two states on japon paper (black and colour), with the exception of a single state illustration in black. A very well preserved copy. A few rare transfers of engravings.
