In-4 (27.3 × 19.6 cm), bradel parma marbled calf decorated with a mosaic motif in brown, green, mauve and orange morocco representing a snake surrounding an iris flower, smooth spine decorated with a gilt floral motif, cover and spine preserved (attributed to Charles Meunier). Edition decorated with 23 figures by Carlos Schwabe, etched and printed in full colour, 10 of which hors texte. "Carlos Schwabe's original compositions constitute one of the best interpretations of Baudelaire's poems; they are at once vigorous, admirably engraved in colour and of a particular artistic note which surprises by its artistic power" (Carteret). Limited edition of 77 numbered copies, one of 74 on Marais wove paper with special watermark (no. 63, printed for Pierre Dauze). Each copy also contains a black suite of the 23 plates. This copy was included in the exhibition "French Symbolist Painters", organised by the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1972 (catalogue no. 315). One of the finest works illustrated by Schwabe.
