Sculpture of "devi" in teak. Burma (Myanmar) 18th-19th century
(defects and breakages) on a modern basis
In Burma, secondary sculptures like this are called "devi" and placed in front of Buddhist altars, pagodas, stupas or shrines. Originally they depicted lower level Hindu deities. In Burma, they became part of the symbolic repertoire of Burmese Theravada Buddhism.
