Mahogany and mahogany veneer writing desk opening with two doors at the bottom, topped by a flap and a secret drawer concealed in the waistband and opening by a push-button on the inside, the cut sides decorated with fleuron, baguettes, curved fluting and scrapers, the panels with spandrels edged with brass baguettes and emerging on a dark wood background. Stamped J*BIRCKLE and stamped JME. Louis XVI period White veined marble top Size 142.5 x 98 x 39.5 cm Fine overall restoration, cracks on the right-hand panels Jacques BIRCKLE (1734-1803), received the title of Master on 30 July 1764. Supplier to the Garde-Meuble under Louis XVI, he produced many mahogany pieces for the Enfants de France. In 1787 he delivered several chests of drawers for the Queen's flats in Saint Cloud.
