Selim Turan (1915 Constantinople/Istanbul - 1994 Paris) Abstract composition Turan is one of the most important contemporary Turkish painters and was one of the first to embrace abstraction. In 1947 Turan went to Paris, where, like many other painters of his generation, he was influenced and moulded by abstract art. In Paris, Turan initially also worked in print workshops, executing prints by artists such as Asgar Jorn, Pierre Soulages, Miró and Picasso; later he worked as an assistant to Hans Hartung. Turan's own abstract paintings were first shown in Paris in 1948 in the group exhibition "La Rose des Vents" (Windmill) at the Galerie des Deux-Iles; his first solo exhibition took place at the Galerie Breteau, one of the leading galleries of the time. Turan quickly became one of the leading painters at the Nouvelle École de Paris. From 1964, he also began working with the architect Jean Balladur, creating artworks for his buildings as well as large-scale sculptures, plaza installations and frescoes for numerous cities.
