Rare allegorical Meissen figure "The Sleep", also titled "The Bliss of Sleep". Hollowed round base. A winged youth standing with crossed legs, leaning against a column fragment with a discarded lion skin and rose-coloured cloth, his head turned to one side with his eyes closed. Dressed in a light blue waistcloth patterned with gold stars. Holding two poppy capsules in his left hand, symbols of the gods of sleep, dreams, night and death. At the side, an upside-down torch surrounded by a floral festoon, which is being extinguished. Polychrome painting with rich gold decoration. Designed by Christian Gottfried Jüchtzer, 1786, model no. I 13, remainder; crossed swords mark. H. 37.5 cm. Designed as a counterpart to the allegorical figure "The Hope". Jüchtzer based his design for the allegory of sleep on contemporary funerary sculptures with a youth and extinguished torch as a symbol of death.
