Lot no. 512
Rare large Art Nouveau bowl with polar bears and art glaze Naturalistic polar bears walking on the edge of an oval bank of ice floes, gazing at the icy surface of the water and searching for food. Run and crystal glaze in combination with underglaze painting. Underglaze blue date "16 - I - 1925". Scratched 279, probably artist's monogram "B" for Sören Berg. Unw. rest. Minimally rubbed; manufacturer's mark. D. 40 cm. W. 36 cm. H. 23,5 cm.
The small crystals created with the glaze on the surface of the water are intended to suggest the reflection of the sun on the ice. At the end of the 19th century, Copenhagen and Sèvres succeeded in developing art glazes modelled on those of East Asia. A comparable bowl with polar bears and art glaze was designed around 1900 by Carl Johann Bonnesen and Valdemar Engelhardt in Copenhagen.
