Rare Meissen figurine group "Chinese couple in an arbour" Irregular base covered with flowers and leaves. Seated young couple holding a book in their hands in front of a lattice-worked, open-worked arbour surrounded by sculptural flower tendrils. Designed by Peter Reinicke, c. 1750, polychrome painting with gold staffage. Minimally restored; crossed swords mark. H. 20 cm. Modelled on an etching of a reading couple in an arbour by Gabriel Huquier after Francois Boucher. A series of Chinese groups of this type were created from the 1740s onwards by J. J. Kaendler, P. Reinecke and J. F. Eberlein after models by F. Boucher and illustrate the French influence on art, culture and architecture at the Saxon court. Cf. cat. Röbbig Munich, Hidden valuables, p. 95 f. and.
