Rare Meissen figurine group "The German Bacchus". Rocailles base in relief, decorated with sculpted flowers and leaves. A gentleman with an allonge wig in elegant rococo dress consisting of purple knee breeches and a white skirt over a shirt and a pale yellow waistcoat patterned with Indian flowers, seated on a reclining wine barrel. Holding a bottle in his raised right hand and in his left. Black hat lying below. Behind him a satyr child with trumpet. Flanking him a boy with a feather and a book as well as a wine jug and a girl sitting on the ground filling the wine from the barrel. Polychrome painting with gold staffage. Designed by Johann Carl Schönheit, 1770, unmarked; crossed swords mark. H. 22.5 cm.
This extremely rare group is compositionally related to the well-known Bacchus group of the youthful Bacchus seated on a wine barrel with a raised wine goblet.
