Lot no. 484
Rare monumental KPM Berlin sculpture vase with sculptural poppy decoration in fin-de-siècle style
Porcelain with a mint to turquoise green and light brown iridescent glaze on all sides. Club-shaped, widening body above a smooth round base with a circular hole. Starting from the lower, smooth wall, ascending, flat to heavily relief-worked vegetal decoration of poppy stems and leaf structures, merging into free-form leaves and large poppy blossoms. At the side, underneath a lowered, hood-shaped goblet, the protruding head of a curiously observing child with a fully sculpted shoulder, right arm and hands holding onto the foliage. Modelled by Richard Edmund Flöricke (active at KPM 1892 - 1942). Design probably by Carl-Hans Bernewitz or Franz Metzner. Model no. 6244 (model book entry September 1899, marked "Fische" (probably in error for model no. 6224 "Vase mit Fantasie Fischen"). Marked Q XIII, one stem rep.; blurred sceptre mark. H. 73 cm.
In the course of the technical innovations of the Chemical-Technical Research Institute of KPM Berlin, founded in 1882, the director Albert Klein succeeded in developing a body similar to frit porcelain, which allowed free modelling of the decoration without the use of moulds. As a result, at the end of the 19th century, only a few unique and characteristic metamorphoses between form and decoration were created, covered with Seger's artistic glazes. KPM Berlin presented two comparable, but smaller, sculptural vessels at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900: the Iris Vase and the Flower Vase with free-plastic iris decoration. A 73 cm high vase by Carl Bernewitz with poppies and two female figures is registered under model no. 6055 (March 1899). The model moulds of the vases were destroyed in 1921.
According to enquiries at the KPM archive, the version offered here is a previously unknown mould. We would like to thank the KPM manufactory archives for their kind information.
