According to Greek legend, Oineus, king of the city of Calydon, incurred the wrath of Artemis because he had not considered her in the sacrificial offerings, whereupon she sent the mighty boar to devastate his land as punishment. The king then summoned the heroes of Greece to the Calydonian Hunt, including Atalante, who had a decisive impact with her arrow shot. A group of figures designed by Kaendler for Tsarina Catherine II of Russia, known as Catherine the Great.
