A rare dessert plate from a service for Duke Frederick of York
Of conical form with a partly open-worked rim and an antique arabesque relief frieze on a blue ground with a vase with a handle and a cupid handing a bowl to a lion grasping it. In the mirror a floral-framed medallion depicting a huntress with a quiver, probably Diana. Fine sepia-brown painting with gold outline. Unw. rest.; sceptre mark. D. 25 cm.
Duke Frederick Augustus of York (1763-1827) was the son of George III of Great Britain and the last Prince-Bishop of the Osnabrück Prince-Bishopric. The dinner service, made around 1786, was probably a gift from Frederick the Great.
