Lot no. 793
Rare Meissen double-handled mug with butterfly decoration from the Royal Court Confectionery with matching saucer. Conically rising body with capuchin brown contours. Lateral handles of opposing volutes. Kakiemon decoration on the wall and in the centre. Central motif of a butterfly with outstretched wings, sitting on a blossoming peony branch. Polychrome painting in iron red, sea green, moss green, blue, yellow and black. Inscribed "K.H.C." in purple overglaze (inventory mark of the Königl. Hofkonditorei). Minimal rest; partial centreboard mark. H. 6.5 cm. The decoration with a central depiction of a butterfly sitting on a branch of flowers is reminiscent of East Asian motifs from the "Famille verte" porcelains, while the scattered flowers are reminiscent of Japanese kakiemon painting. See Eikelmann, cat. Meissen after East Asian models, vol. II, p. 344; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, inv. no. 74.46.7a-b. A Kakiemon style porcelain cup and saucer with "Butterfly pattern" from the Royal Court Confectionery. Purple K.H.C. confectioner's mark. Minor restored. Partly crossed swords mark. Meissen. Circa 1750.
