Rare tobacco pot with chinoiserie by Du Paquier Rectangular body with recessed corners. On the front of both walls a Chinese man in a blossoming garden landscape in front of a pagoda with a perforated rock. The narrow sides with Indian flowering shrubs in front of a fence. Individual ornaments in the corners. The inner rim with zigzag border. Fine polychrome painting with subtle gold decoration. Remainder; coll. label. H. 11 cm.
Further examples with architectural chinoiserie decoration, probably inspired by European engravings and reminiscent of the chinoiseries by J.G. Hoeroldt in Meissen, can be found on a tankard in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague (UPM; inv. no. c.78.700) and on an important jug in the MAK in Vienna (inv. no. Ke 4635). Examples of the form are represented in various collections, for example on a tobacco pot with medallions from the Sullivan Collection, West Hartford.
