Provenance: Palace inventory, Rhineland. Literature: - Edwards, Ralph: The Shorter Dictionary Of English Furniture, London 1964. For this type, cf. pg.584 fig. 27 and pg.585 fig.28, for the mascaron pg.429 fig.14. - Wills, Geoffrey: English Furniture 1550-1760, London 1971. For this type cf. pg.219 fig.169, for the mascaron cf. pg.175 fig.22. Console tables have been among the most important items in aristocratic estates since the early 17th century. Their vastly opulent and decorative forms helped facilite the courtly representation of their owners. One console table with seated wolves, probably based on a design by William Kent and worked by Benjamin Goodison (1695-1767) for Longford castle, can now be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. A further, very similar pair of consoles with seated foxes is currently in possession of the National Trust at Stourhead Mansion, Wiltshire.
