SENGHOR Léopold Sédar - SARTRE Jean-Paul. Anthologie de la nouvelle poésie Nègre et Malgache de langue française by Léopold Sédar-Senghor, preceded by Orphée noir by Jean-Paul Sartre. Paris, Presses Universitaires de France, 1948; in-8 paperback, xliv, 227 pp, cover illustrated with pink naves. First edition of this precious collection of negro and Malagasy poetry, one of the most important in the history of negritude, with a preface by Jean-Paul Sartre. Although the word "négritude", coined by Césaire and Senghor, began to circulate in 1935, it was only with this anthology and the preface by Jean-Paul Sartre that it was born as a concept. Sartre's preface, entitled Orphée noir (Black Orpheus), is a work in itself: "What did you expect when you removed the gag from these black mouths? That they would sing your praises? The anthology brings together poems by 16 authors, presented by region: Léon-G. Damas for French Guiana, Gilbert Gratiant, Etienne Lero and Aimé Césaire for Martinique, Guy Tirolien and Paul Niger for Guadeloupe, Léon Lalau, Jacques Roumain, Jean-F. Brière and René Belance for Haiti, Birago Diop, Léopold Sédar Senghor and David Diop for Black Africa, and Jean-Joseph Rabéarivelo, Jacques Rabémananjara and Flavien Ranaivo for Madagascar. One of 20 numbered copies hors commerce on Nemours watermarked wove paper, the only edition on large paper. A perfectly preserved copy. Extremely rare title on large paper.
