Lot no. 164
SERGE GAINSBOURG (1928/1991) & BORIS VIAN (1920/1959): A piston trumpet belonging to the jazz and dance club "Le Tabou", located at 33 rue Dauphine in Paris. Opened on 11 April 1947, this Parisian club quickly became a favourite meeting place for night owls and intellectuals. A Mecca for existentialists.
Among the first musicians to perform there was Boris Vian, who founded a small jazz orchestra with his brothers. Juliette Gréco recited poems by Raymond Queneau and sang songs by Jacques Prévert.
When Boris Vian died in June 1959, the pianist Henri Renaud gave this piston trumpet to Serge Gainsbourg, as it was with this trumpet that Vian had accompanied Gainsbourg when he played his first songs on the piano at the Tabou. The instrument is engraved with the words 'Boris Vian & Serge Gainsbourg - Le Tabou 1953'. In its original case. Historic piece. As is.
