Lot no. 581
EGOIST SERVICE IN TRICROME PORCELAIN, CHINA FOR THE COMPANY OF THE INDIES, CIRCA 1740-50 with heraldic decoration, probably with the Obando family coat of arms, in the manner of the Du Paquier manufacture and consisting of a cup, chocolate bowl, two pots and a tray; a few minor losses to the lids, some wear and tear and firing defects Various sizes A CHINA FOR EXPORT PORCELAIN EGOISTE SERVICE, CIRCA 1740-1750; COVER WITH A FEW MINOR LOSSES, SLIGHTLY WORN, SOME FIRING DEFECTS Our service is part of a group of porcelains made in China during the Qianlong period on the orders of the Obando family, as the inscription on the en suite dish now in the Gianetti Museum in Saronno (inv. no. 145) would seem to indicate (despite the differences with the known Obando coats of arms). If this were the case, a possible patron for this ensemble could be the Spaniard Francisco José de Ovando (or Obando) Solís Rol de La Cerda, the first Marquis of Brindisi (ca. 1693-1755), a Spanish army and navy officer, protagonist of the capture of Brindisi during the War of Polish Succession in 1734 and who ended his military career with important assignments in the colonies, as governor of Chile in 1745 and, from 1750, of the Philippines, where he founded the city of Obando in 1753. For an examination of the decoration used, with a few variations, on these porcelains and other known pieces similar to them, see L. Zenone Padula in Aa.Vv., Porcellane italiane europee e orientali. Museo Gianetti, Saronno 2000, card 221, pp. 356-357).
