Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 130,000 Euro The portfolio ‘Lapidari’ was published in 1981 and contained texts about the properties of different stones, which were written by anonymous Catalan authors of the 15th century. Miró illustrated these texts with 12 etchings in black and white and 12 in colors. The plates present here are maquettes for the 12 etchings in colors, in which the artist tried out with pastels the positions of the colored elements printed later as aquatint. They therefore partly differ from of the final position and thus make the plates to particularly exciting unique works. Condition: The 12 etchings worked over with pastel are in overall good condition with slight workshop traces. The sheets are each mounted to a backing board with Japan paper on the reverse. The sheets measure each c. 35.5 x 49.7 cm. The dimensions of the frames are 40 x 54.5 cm each. Joan Miró (1893-1983) Miró was born in Barcelona where he grew up and started his artistic studies. He went to the Academy La Llotja against his parents’ will who had wanted him to work in a more traditional way. He later studied at the Escola d’Art from Francesc Galí and got to know the Fauves and the cubists. In 1920 he moved to Paris, where he lived amongst the most creative artists of his time. He got to know Arp, Magritte, Brancusi and Giacometti and exhibited with Dalí, Yves Tanguy, Meret Oppenheim and Max Ernst in several exhibitions about Dadaism and Surrealism. Miró moved to Mallorca in 1956, where he created first sculptures, later ceramics, and repeatedly oil paintings. (fea) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
