Set of five chapes. 16th century. Medieval chapes were metal reinforcements located at the bottom of sword or dagger sheaths, whose purpose was to protect the tip of the blade and the material of the sheath, whether leather or wood. Although their primary function was to provide protection, they also served as an ornament and symbol of status.
