SET OF RARE GREEK HIGH KARAT GOLD GORGONEION APPLIQUÉS. Ca. 400 - 300 BCA collection of three gold appliqués, each modelled from thin sheet with a Gorgon head in high relief. Each rounded face has prominent brows, large eyes, a broad nose, and full lips slightly parted, framed by a mass of snake hair falling in thick locks around the cheeks and across the forehead, with small wings rising at the sides of the head. On the reverse, the plaques are concave, with a small attachment loop at the centre of each piece.Size: 16-16mm x 15-15mm; Weight: 1.6g.Provenance: Private London collection; previously part of a distinguished New York private collection, assembled between 1975 and 1995. The collection was documented and authenticated in the early 1990s by Dr. Jack Ogden and Barbara Deppert Lippitz, leading specialists in ancient jewellery.
