First edition of the French translation by Claude Huart of this précis of sceptical philosophy. The work demonstrates the influence of the sceptics on Western thought. A precious and beautiful copy bound with the arms of the Princesse de Lamballe (1749-1792), born Marie-Thérèse de Savoie-Carignan, an unfortunate friend of Queen Marie-Antoinette. Sensitive, upright and intelligent, she was butchered by revolutionaries in September 1792 and her head carried around Paris on a pike. This is a very rare and sought-after provenance.
