SADJI. The Concert II. Oil on canvas signed right centre in Chinese and French. On the back a label of Sadji's exhibition of 16 September 1942 (number 45) which took place in Brussels at "La Petite galerie", 3 avenue Louise Brussels. Also on the back, on the left side of the frame, a label from the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, Reference 973. Provenance: Artist. Sadji La petite galerie exhibition. 1942. Private collection of Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth of Belgium (1876-1965). Dispersed at auction in Brussels circa 1976. Private Belgian collection of the great Namurois from 1976 to the present. The memories of the owner remain unclear. The painting was acquired at a sale at the Palais des Beaux Arts or the Galerie Moderne in Brussels around 1976. We find the same crowned R.E label on the back of a work by Eugène Laermans, "Les deuillants, 1894", sold by Christie's London in 2007 during the dispersal of the collections of H.R.H. Princess Marie Gabrielle de Savoie, the painting originally coming from the collections of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium (lot 44). The same RE label attesting to royal possessions appears on lot 42 of the London sale of 27 June 2007: an engraving by Baron Pierre Paulus du Chatelet dedicated: "à Sa Majesté la Reine Elisabeth hommage de respect et d'admiration et de reconnaissance le 28 novembre 1924, Pierre Paulus". Sha Qi was born in 1914 in Zhejiang province. In 1937 he entered the Académie des Beaux Arts in Brussels, where he became a pupil of Alfred Bastien. In the 1940s, he had numerous exhibitions in Brussels, notably with Mr Van Loo, owner of "la petite galerie". This painting was shown there in 1942. Sadji's work attracted the interest of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, who was a great collector. She also acquired Young Woman with a Flute at an exhibition at the Petit Palais. In 1946, mental health problems led her to return to China. The rest of his career was interrupted several times, but his talent was recognised by the Chinese state thanks to the help of his mentor Xu Beihong and former prime minister Zhou Enlai. In the 80s, he was more present on the art scene with exhibitions in Hangzhou and the capital. A stroke in 1997 put an end to his career and he died 8 years later at the age of 91.
