Provenienz Direkt vom Künstler; Privatsammlung, Berlin Das Verhältnis von Licht und Farbe ist ein zentrales Thema in Sigmar Polkes Oeuvre, mit dem der Künstler sich wiederholt mit neuen, zum Teil sehr ungewöhnlichen Materialien auseinandersetzt. Der Interferenzfarbe widmet sich Polke ab den 1990er Jahren, in der Folge entstehen zahlreiche Werke, in denen die besondere Ästhetik des Materials hervorgehoben wird. Dabei spielen Zufall und Unkontrollierbarkeit eine wichtige Rolle, Polke schüttet die Farbe direkt auf das Papier oder die Leinwand und bestimmt den Verlauf der Farbe nur bedingt durch die Bewegung des Bildträgers. „Polke trieb seine Materialien bis an einen Punkt, wo die Vernunft strauchelt und die Dinge beginnen, nicht durch die Voraussicht oder das bewusste Handeln des Künstlers Gestalt anzunehmen, sondern durch nichtrationale Bedingungen wie Schwerkraft, Zufall und das Assoziationsvermögen des Unbewussten. Kein binäres System war befriedigend, keine Ideologie anziehend, keine Geometrie verkörperte das Göttliche und keine Wahrheit siegte. Polke war besessen davon, durch den Einsatz des Zufalls zu weniger aufgesetzten und weniger sentimentalen Ausdrucksformen zu gelangen; er wollte seine Materialien von seiner Kontrolle befreien, um die Mühelosigkeit zu unterlaufen und über das hinauszugelangen, was er bereits wusste.“ (Kathy Halbreich, Alibis, Eine Einführung, in: Kathy Halbreich u.a. Provenance Acquired directly from the artist; private collection, Berlin The relationship between light and colour is a central theme in Sigmar Polke's oeuvre, in which the artist repeatedly deals with new, partially very unusual materials. Polke began dedicating himself to interference colour in the 1990s and subsequently created numerous works in which the special aesthetics of the material are emphasised. Chance and non-controllability play an important role in this; Polke pours the paint directly onto the paper or the canvas and determines the course of the colour only to a certain extent by moving the support. 'Polke drove his materials to a point where reason stumbles and things begin to take shape - not through the artist's foresight or conscious action, but through non-rational conditions such as gravity, chance and the ability of association of the unconscious. No binary system was satisfactory, no ideology attractive, no geometry embodied divinity and no truth triumphed. Polke was obsessed with the use of chance to achieve less contrived and less sentimental forms of expression; he wanted to liberate his materials from his control in order to undermine effortlessness and to surpass what he already knew'.
