Silver-mounted tankard with fan-shaped Chinese decoration. by Johann Ehrenfried Stadler Cylindrical body, rounded band handle with palmette relief on the back. The wall with a scenic depiction of festively dressed Chinese with fans and an open umbrella in a blossoming Asian garden landscape with peony and chrysanthemum trees growing upwards. Polychrome painting in iron red, purple, moss and sea green, brown and black, probably by Johann Ehrenfried Stadler. Silver-mounted stand and lid with chiselled scrollwork border, bird-shaped thumb rest. Marked Frankfurt/Main, master Johann Conrad Kempf (Kämpf) (becomes master 1715). H. 19 cm. Provenance: from the liquidation of an important North German private collection, acquired at Sotheby's auction 14 December 2001, Zurich, lot 754. Johann Ehrenfried Stadler worked at the Meissen porcelain manufactory from 1723/24. He was one of the best painters of the Hoeroldt period, specialising in East Asian flowers, animals and chinoiseries. Cf. Pietsch, Coll.
