Lot no. 363
SILVER HALF GROAT OF HENRY VI
Ca. AD 1422 - 1430.
A hammered silver halfgroat of Henry VI, issued during his first reign (1422–1430), struck at the London mint, with the initial mark cross. The obverse features the youthful crowned bust of the king within a tressure of arches, surrounded by an inscription. The reverse bears a long cross with three pellets in each quarter. An evocative piece from the troubled early Lancastrian period, when the kingdom was ruled by a child king amidst the Hundred Years' War.
Size: 20mm x 20mm; Weight: 2g
Provenance: From the private collection of an Essex gentleman; previously in an old British Collection, formed in the 1990s.
