Lot no. 51
SIMEONI (Gabriele). Le satire alla berniesca di M. Gabriello Symeoni con vna Elegia sopra alla morte del re Francesco primo... Turin, Martino Cravotto, 1549. In-4 (202 x 144 mm). Blue morocco with lace (Derome le Jeune). First edition, dedicated to King Henry II. These Berniesque satires - inspired by the banter and burlesque genre in which the poet Francesco Berni excelled - are followed by a long elegy addressed to Marguerite de Valois on the death of Francis I, a sonnet on the coronation of Henry II, and other occasional pieces intended to gain the support of the French court. When Simeoni published this collection, he had been in Turin since February 1548, where he had met Henry II, who was staying there in August 1548. He then sent the edition to him via Pierre du Chastel. The writer "seems to have found in Piedmont, though tormented by war, a kind of chosen land, a haven of peace... He was to stay there until November 1550, under the protection of Giovanni Caracciolo, Prince of Melfi and Governor of Piedmont". Edit-16 CNCE 25189. Spine browned, small bump to second board.
