Simone Peterzano was an Italian Mannerist painter, active mainly in Milan. A pupil of Titian in Venice, he was influenced by his master's colourful and sensual style, which is reflected in his early works. He later set up his own studio in Milan, where he became Caravaggio's master. Peterzano's work thus marks a stylistic bridge between Venetian mannerism and the dramatic naturalism of the late 16th century.
