Representative portrait of Cooper, composed in an oval, wearing a dark brown jacket and a white collar over his stand-up collar, his head turned in half profile. The eminent English anatomist and surgeon, who was famous beyond the borders of the United Kingdom, was also personal physician to Kings George IV and William IV and Queen Victoria. In 1828, Thomas Lawrence painted his famous hip portrait of the physician, on which this portrait is based. Lawrence left his mark on European portrait painting of his time and became court painter in 1792 after the death of Joshua Reynolds.
