Sculpture
Seger, Ernst
Sandal binder. Circa 1900. alabaster with bronze applications. Height 39.5 cm (41.5 cm). On a yellow marbled stone base. Verso inscribed "Prof. Ernst Seger".
The German sculptor Ernst Seger is known for his elegant and detailed sculptures in the style of Neoclassicism and Art Nouveau. After training with Christian Behrens in Breslau, he first worked in Berlin in the studio of Reinhold Begas and in Paris with Auguste Rodin before establishing himself as a freelance artist. Seger's works, often made of marble or bronze, mainly focus on female nudes and mythological figures. Our sculpture with the motif of the sandal-tying woman also draws on an ancient model that was often taken up in the art of the 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition to the symbolised beauty and elegance, the gracefully submerged posture in soft forms also conveys self-forgetfulness and naturalness. - Elegant, fully sculpted female nude with a few small spots of dirt and rubbing. The left foot with a break and traces of restoration.
