Lot no. 37
Somsak Hanumas (Born 1980) Acrylic on canvas. Dimensions: H: 160; W: 170 cm with frame Provenance: Private collection, Luxembourg Somsak Hanumas (Born 1980) Thai painter. Born in Bangkok on 26 November 1980. The work becomes the point of departure in the aesthetic experience and not its completion. As a young graduate, Somsak decided to pick up his paintbrush and give free rein to his vocation, and from then on he never parted with his art. He has now been painting for over 18 years, using a technique that he learnt himself. After painting a background on the canvas, Somsak adds numerous coloured dots, which he scatters over the canvas in a gradation whose general idea is engraved in his mind. After this stage, Somsak would use a finer brush to draw a series of lines superimposed on the dots, until they covered the entire canvas. The length and repetitiveness of this work demand extreme patience, but it suits him because it gives him time to reflect on the meaning of his painting and, even further, on the meaning of life and the passing of time. On average, a painting takes 8 to 12 weeks to complete. Somsak often says that the source of his art comes from the landscapes that have marked him. A beach in Thailand, a field beaten by the monsoon, the edge of a jungle... while adding his own personal touch, his own vision. The works of Somsak Hanumas have already won over the Whalroos Foundation in Finland, the Mikati Collection in Lebanon, the Bernard Magrez Collection in Bordeaux, the Vermeer Collection in the Netherlands and, not least, the LVMH group, which has placed them on the walls of their shops.
