Karl Edler von Innstädten Sonklar (Weisskirchen 1816 - Innsbruck 1885) was an Austrian officer and geographer. He was born in Banat, on the Austro-Hungarian military border (now divided between Romania and Serbia). His first books in 1844 and 1845 were of a purely military nature, but he soon turned to the geography and topography of the Alps. In 1857, he published his first work on the Alps and Carpathians; from then on, he published numerous books on the eastern Alps: the Hochschwab massif in Upper Styria (1859), the Ötztal in 1860, the Hohen Tauern in 1866 and the Zillertal Alps in 1877. His last works were more general on alpine geography, such as Die Orographie u. Topographie, Hydrographie und Gletscherwesen published in Munich in 1879.
