SOPHOCLE. Tragœdiæ quotquot extant carmine latino redditæ. Antwerp, Jean Bellère, 1584. In-8, fawn calf, double gilt fillet, crowned heraldic emblem in the centre, ornate spine, inner lace (19th century English binding). Second edition of the Latin translation by George Rataller (1528-1581) of the seven surviving tragedies by Sophocles. The first edition appeared in Antwerp in 1570, but Antigone had been published separately twenty years earlier. An elegant copy of the Dukes of Devonshire, with their heraldic crest gilt on the boards and the engraved bookplate of Chatsworth Castle, their fief in Derbyshire. Hinges expertly rebound, corners slightly dulled, very pale angular spotting to A section, last blank leaf not preserved. Belgica typographica, n°4385 - USTC 406681.
