Lot no. 852
SOUTH ARABIAN MARBLE STELA WITH INSCRIPTION.
Ca. 300 - 100 BC This South Arabian stela in buff calcareous stone is dominated by a projecting “hula”- style face carved in high relief, its features strongly schematised, with heavy brows, deep-set eyes, a wedge-like nose, and a closed mouth. Beneath the chin, a short incised inscription survives, lightly cut across the surface. The sides and reverse are roughly dressed and worn, with losses consistent with long use or secondary reuse. Two small perforations on the back appear to relate to later mounting rather than the original setting. Size: 360mm x 200mm; Weight: 8.750kg. Provenance: Private London collection; previously acquired from a Belgian collection (1980s-1990s). This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. For similar see: Christie's, Live Auction 10372, Antiquities, Lot. 78.
