Lot no. 84
SOUVENIR OF THE BIRTH OF THE KING OF ROME Fragment of a woven garter in red, white, orange and pink wool yarn Presented with a letterhead from the Domaines de la Couronne, annotated in pen by PF Julien : "Copy of a note taken by the Tuileries Palace clerk during the nappies of "S.M.I. Marie Louise". On 20 March 1811 at three quarters to eight in the morning, a wardrobe boy asked the concierge at the Tuileries for a red woollen garter, saying that he was in such a hurry that he could not find any elsewhere. The clerk at the Palais, embarrassed to comply with the request, thought of offering his own garters, which more or less fulfilled his wishes. The boy took them away and the one attached to the note was used for the delivery of Marie Louise Empress of France. Signed L.F. Julien, Palais clerk patented by the Emperor through H.E. the Duke of Frioul, grand marshal of the Palais. It is from this garter that a fragment was given by the depositary to M. David of Paris, and he is the only one to whom it was given. Compiègne, 17 May 1835. The concierge of the Palais régisseur du domaine, former clerk of the Palais des Tuileries. Dimensions (document) : 28 x 21 cm Dimensions (frame) : 33 x 27 cm A.B.E. Origin : Former Napoleonic collection of the Prince's Palace of Monaco (3rd sale, lot 200) A souvenir of the King of Rome's birth, fragment of a woven garter in red, white, orange and pink wool yarn Commentary: It should be noted that this astonishing relic is mentioned in the "Chronique médicale", volume 12, Year 1905, p. 336 and 337. At the time, the garter and certificate were the property of Mr Peschard, police commissioner for the Gaillon district. The hypothesis put forward is that the garter was used by Dubois to pull the forceps used to deliver the Empress, a forceps that Dubois himself had perfected.
