L'AURORE of Tuesday 2 June 1906 with the headline "10 ans après, à la veille de le cérémonie au Panthéon, le colonel du Paty de Clam répond au "J'accuse" d'Émile Zola", 61 X 46 cm, folds, missing margins. Framed under glass. The publication of Émile Zola's J'accuse...! was a major turning point in the Dreyfus Affair and, more broadly, in the political, judicial and intellectual history of France. In this open letter to the President of the Republic, Félix Faure, Zola publicly denounced the malfunctioning of military justice, the manipulation of evidence and the anti-Semitism that had led to the unjust conviction of Captain Alfred Dreyfus.
The article caused a considerable stir in public opinion. Published on the front page of a major daily newspaper with wide circulation, J'accuse...! made the affair accessible to the whole of French society. It crystallised the division in the country between Dreyfus supporters, defenders of justice and truth, and anti-Dreyfus supporters, attached to the authority of the army and often driven by anti-Semitic nationalism. The violence of the reactions - demonstrations, polemics, press campaigns - testified to the depth of the social and political divide. On the legal front, Zola was prosecuted for defamation and convicted in February 1898, forcing him into temporary exile in England. Paradoxically, this trial helped to revive the Dreyfus Affair: public and media debates highlighted the irregularities of the initial trial. Eventually, this mobilisation led to a review of the trial, followed by Dreyfus's full rehabilitation in 1906.
Politically, the affair had a lasting effect on weakening the military and judicial institutions and accelerated Republican awareness of the need to guarantee the independence of the judiciary. It also strengthened the republican and secular camp against nationalist and conservative forces.
J'accuse...! marked the birth of the modern role of the committed intellectual. Zola put his fame at the service of a cause in the name of universal values: truth, justice and human rights. This stance became a model for the intellectual commitments of the twentieth century.
Finally, the text remains a powerful symbol of freedom of expression and moral courage in the face of state injustice. Its legacy goes beyond the Dreyfus Affair to become a lasting part of French political and democratic culture.
