SOVEREIGN AS ROMAN EMPEROR Incomplete figure in terracotta sculpted in the round probably representing Louis XIV dressed as a Roman Emperor, his right hand resting on his chest. France, early 18th century. Height: 26 cm - Width: 11 cm - Depth: 10 cm (Numerous visible accidents and such as the head and the left hand) PROVENANCE - Sale by André Périgois on 25 February 1976, Drouot Paris, room 17, n°49. - Collection C., Marseille. Probably a modello for a monumental sculpture such as the one representing Louis XIV delivered by Antoine Coysevox (1640 - 1720) in in 1689 to adorn the arcade at the end of the courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris [Musée Carnavalet, N° inv. S29]
