Very rare, early edition of the important Spanish picaresque novel. - Laurenti 565 quoted inaccurately after Diaz, V. 733, who probably did not have this edition. - Not in Palau. - One of the greatest picaresque novels in world literature, characterised by nuanced language of strong expressiveness, a classical prose style and a skilful narrative mode. The 2nd part, published in 3 sections, was written by Mateo Luján de Sayavedra (pseud.), attributed to the Balencian lawyer Juan Marti. - Provenance: Counts Harrach, Austrian aristocracy, with the cancellation stamp "Ex Bibliotheca Viennensi" on the title page and hs. Library sigle on flyleaf. Front endpaper recto. Ferdinand Bonaventura I von Harrach (1637-1706) and his son Alois Count Harrach (1669-1762) were Austrian envoys in Madrid. The latter also held the office of viceroy in the then Spanish Kingdom of Naples between 1728 and 1733. During this time, the Harrachs built up a considerable collection of Spanish and Italian prints from the 16th and 17th centuries, which would later enrich the library of the Harrach Palace in Vienna. (Cf. Wurzbach VII (1861), pp. 371-73.) - Partly browned and somewhat brownstained due to paper, 3 pp. with small corner tear (without loss of text), occasional small marginal tears, upper margin occasionally trimmed, otherwise generally well-preserved.
