Very rare early edition of one of the first picaresque novels. - Palau 82590 - Palau y Dulcet, vol. 3, p. 148 and Salva II, 1796 (without voucher) - Goldsmith E-97 - The present edition cannot be traced at auction. - The first edition was published in 1618. - Provenance: Counts Harrach, Austrian aristocracy, with the cancellation stamp "Ex Bibliotheca Viennensi" and hs. Library sigle on the title page and on a mounted label on the front pastedown. Ferdinand Bonaventura I von Harrach (1637-1706) and his son Alois Count Harrach (1669-1762) were Austrian envoys in Madrid. The latter also held the office of viceroy in the then Spanish Kingdom of Naples between 1728 and 1733. During this time, the Harrachs built up a considerable collection of Spanish and Italian prints from the 16th and 17th centuries, which would later enrich the library of the Harrach Palace in Vienna. (Cf. Wurzbach VII (1861), pp. 371-73.) - With heavier trimming, especially at the headpiece (though without loss of text), paper browned, altogether a well-preserved copy of this rare work of literary-historical importance.
