Lot no. 139
SPILLIAERT (Léon). Winter pleasures. Brussels, L'Art décoratif C. Dangotte, 1918. In-4, leaves, hardback folder with flaps illustrated with a lithograph. First edition of this charming suite of 10 original lithographs, 5 in black and 5 in pastel colours, by Léon Spilliaert. This lovely children's book, depicting winter fun and games, was published in the Petit Artiste collection. The black plates were to be coloured in by the children themselves. Edition of 100 copies on japon impérial signed by the artist. The painter Léon Spilliaert is one of the leading exponents of Belgian symbolism. It is likely that the work was inspired by the birth of his daughter Madeleine, taking him away from his darker inspiration. Cover slightly rubbed.
