Spitzweg, Carl 1808 Munich - 1885 Munich Landscape with Carriage and Figures Signed lower right with an S in a rhombus (restored). Oil on paper on panel. 18.4 x 31.5 cm. Restored. Frame slightly damaged. Right from his early career, Carl Spitzweg concerned himself with the motif of the stagecoach. Whilst at first the coach took a central role within the image (for example in the painting ''The Arrival of the Stagecoach'' from the late 1850s, see Wichmann Cat. Rais. No. 866), in his later paintings it moves ever further into the distance. The carriage portrayed in the present painting occupies the middle ground, shown moving off towards the horizon, followed by several figures. In such works Spitzweg's Landscapes portray scenes already confined to history, evoking romanticised memories of a bygone era. This theme is carried throughout the image, noticeable also in the ''old-fashioned'' clothing worn by the couple in the foreground. Literature: Fischer, Lucerne, Auction 21.-25. Öl auf Papier auf Holz. 18,4 x 31,5 cm. Rest. Rahmen min. besch. Bereits früh beschäftigte sich Carl Spitzweg mit dem Bildmotiv der Postkutsche. Während diese anfangs noch bildbestimmend war (z. B. bei dem Gemälde "Ankunft der Postkutsche" aus den späten 50er Jahren, vgl. Wichmann WVZ-Nr. 866), so rückt sie bei den späteren Gemälden immer weiter in die Ferne. Auch der auf vorliegendem Werk dargestellte Reisewagen entfernt sich langsam im Bildmittelgrund, ihm folgen mehrere Personen. Bei diesen Arbeiten zeigen Spitzwegs Landschaften eine längst der Vergangenheit angehörige Staffage, das Thema wird in romantischer Erinnerung an unwiederbringliche Zeiten dargestellt.
