Lot no. 151
St RAPHAËL QUINQUINA - playing cards carpet circa 1940 . Nice condition. 61,5 x 45,5 cm. Representation of Charles Loupot's two waiters. The story begins in 1830, when Dr Adémar Juppet was working on the development of an aperitif based on cinchona and wine. He then remembered the biblical epitaph in which the Archangel St Raphael cured Tobias of his blindness. Wishing to regain his sight in order to complete his research, Dr Juppet placed his new elixir under the celestial invocation of the Archangel. When his wish was granted, he succeeded in developing his recipe and gave his creation the name of St Raphael. 1932 marked a new turning point in the iconographic history of St Raphaël with the appearance of the two waiters in the brand's various creations. These two silhouettes, also known as "Twins", were inspired by two actors: Armand Bernard and Paul Marien. (source:straphael.fr)
