Lot no. 53
STACE. Sylvarum libri quinque. Thebaidos libri duodecim. Achilleidos duo. Venice, Aldus, 1502. 2 works in a small volume in-8, soft vellum (pastiche binding). First Aldine edition of Stace's works, in the first printing, which can be identified by the error in the colophon "Cautum est et in hoc, ut in caeteris". Dedicated to Pontanus, this edition was entirely revised by Aldus Manutius and went to press in November 1502. Bound afterwards: [ALDE L'ANCIEN]. Orthographia et flexus dictionum græcarum omnium apud Statium. [Venice, Aldus, 1502]. First edition of the analytical table of Stace's works written by Aldus Manutius, who dedicated it to Mark Musurus. It indicates the spelling of the Greek words used by the poet in his works, the cases in which they are used, their accentuation and finally their Latin translation. The Aldine anchor mark is printed on the last leaf. Renouard, 35:7 - Brunet, V, 512 - Adams, S-1670.
